6 Places To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

We love a month that kicks off with a fiesta! Cinco de Mayo, the annual Mexican holiday commemorating that country’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, is this coming Tuesday. Over the years, the day has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

How to take part in the festivities? We suggest you start with food, and Bergen’s a great place to do it. Our spread of Mexican restaurants is extensive and mouthwatering, whether you’re searching for a perfectly mixed margarita, a super-authentic mole sauce or street taco or a heaping plate of nachos with all the fixings.

Below are a few places you can stop by on May 5, or any other day of the year (many of them Readers’ Choice Award nods, and all of them highly rated):

Blue Moon Mexican Café. The 2025 winner for Best Margaritas also has mouthwatering food options to browse—try brisket tacos and signature fajitas. (Plus, it’s gearing up for a special Cinco de Mayo party.)
*327 Franklin Ave., Wyckoff, 201.891.1331

Chapala Grill. Everything at this spot is super-fresh and handmade (including the tortillas!). Start off with the famous guacamole, made tableside, and then try house specials like bistec chapala and tacos al pastor.
*2 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield, 201.387.2107

El Azteca. This local chain has locations in Park Ridge, Mahwah and Waldwick. The menu is filled with crowd-pleasing favorites, and don’t skip over the catering option if you want to bring an at-home Cinco celebration to life.
*Multiple locations

El Taco Bar. If you’re craving fast casual and birria tacos, this is a great option. In fact, you’ll have dozens of different tacos to choose from when you come here. Have a sweet tooth? The churros are also fantastic.
*244 Closter Dock Rd, Closter, 201.499.5757

Jalapeños Mexican Grill. This place knows how to do events and specials, making it a favorite among locals. Don’t skip weekly trivia and karaoke nights, and keep an eye out for Cinco de Mayo celebrations. (And, of course, the menu more than satisfies.)
*930 Prospect St., Glen Rock, 201.445,5566

Lolita’s Mexican Cantina. Winner of the 2025’s Best Mexican Restaurant in Bergen, you’ll find both traditional and modern takes on Mexican food here. Don’t miss out on the happy hour!
*65 Old Hook Rd., Westwood, 201.666.7998
