Relief for new moms

Giving birth can involve its share of aches and pains, but a new service offered at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch is making the days after labor much easier on new mothers. Giving birth can involve its share of aches and pains, but a new service offered at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch is making the days after labor much easier on new mothers. For an additional fee, maternity patients can enjoy in-room relaxation and wellness treatments from Bavia Baby (732.403.3113, baviahealth.com), an independent Minneapolis-based company.

Bavia’s postnatal spa packages include the “Mama Me-Ahhh!” ($165 for 60 minutes), a full-body treatment that involves gentle massage to improve circulation and enhance sleep and the application of eucalyptus-infused steam towels to the feet to reduce swelling and ease pain. Another soothing option is the “Sleepy Head” treatment ($65 for 30 minutes), a massage of the head, neck and shoulders. All treatments feature low lighting, aromatherapy and music to help set the tone for relaxation.

“I created the treatments after researching the healing practices that primitive people used when birthing in caves, igloos and log cabins,” says Bavia founder and CEO Rachel Swardson. “Even in a modern hospital setting, mothers who have experienced our treatments have reported an immediate improvement in restfulness and less pain and anxiety.”

Packages can be purchased for new moms as a gift. “Rather than the typical balloons and flowers, you’ll be giving them a healthy, memorable experience,” says Swardson.
