Taking The Plunge
Over in Mahwah, a goldendoodle surprises her person with a polar bear impression.

Darlington Lake is a regular stomping ground for Mahwah’s Kat Barrett and her goldendoodle, Phoebe. “We walk here most days of the week,” she says. “It’s great because it’s fenced in, there are both paved and gravel walking trails and so many fields to play in.” But Barrett was in for a special surprise when she took Pheobe there one snowy day in late December. To her shock, the pup took off toward the lake and dove right in, ignoring the thin layer of ice on the top. “Phoebe loves playing in the snow—sometimes I think she’s part polar bear—but she never showed any interest in the lake until that day. Her jumping right in was not on my bingo card!” says Barrett, who posted the moment to her Instagram. Phoebe was completely unphased by the cold lake water, according to her person, and wanted to play and chase snowballs when she climbed out. “When we got home, she got swaddled in a towel and took a nap by the fireplace,” Barrett reports.
