While the pros keep your lawn and landscape tidy and clean, there’s much more you can do to boost your property’s curb appeal this season. It’s all about making a great first impression, whether you’re hosting an all-day get-together, thinking about testing the real estate market or simply adding charm to your home.

Summer is the perfect season to freshen up your home’s exterior and, with a few simple upgrades, you can boost curb appeal almost instantly. Below are a few easy ways to do it:

Clean underfoot. You’d keep the floors inside the house clean, so consider doing the same outside. Pressure wash driveways and sidewalks to remove dirt, debris and algae, which can create a slipping hazard when wet.

Glam up the garden. Let your garden strut its stuff with a dazzling display of summer blooms. What’s in season? Zinnias, according to Borst Landscape & Design in Allendale, are a popular choice because they stand up to heat and attract pollinators. “They come in various colors, from bright oranges and yellows to deep reds and purples, and their long-lasting blooms can add a burst of color to any garden bed or container,” he says. Marigolds, petunias and sunflowers also provide summer fun.

Improve your lighting. Using lights to line your driveway and yard can enhance the appearance of your home when it’s dark. You also can add strings of lights, which add warmth and a welcoming touch in early evenings. “String lights or festive decorations for holidays also can add a cheerful touch,” says Taylor Lucyk, broker associate at The Taylor Lucyk Group in Paramus.

Freshen up the front door. Upgrade your front door and porch area with some new décor—a floral wreath, for example. If you have outdoor furniture on your front porch, you can also change the color palette of any weatherproof pillows to achieve a fitting seasonal appearance. “Symmetry can make a home appear more polished and appealing,” Lucyk adds. “Try matching plants on either side of your front door or placing matching lanterns by the entrance.”

Show your style. Your home should reflect your style, so consider adding pieces that showcase your own tastes. “Place a bench, chair or a few unique outdoor décor pieces like lanterns or sculptures to reflect your personality and make it feel more like a home,” he says.

Make it metal. Give the outside of your home a contemporary feel with metal accents. Metal planters, decorative fence topper or light fixtures can modernize your look and provide a sleek, industrial touch.
