What Do They Really Think?
Eleven rising high school seniors sound off on AI, college and the future in BERGEN’s annual student forum.

Every year, BERGEN asks students on the verge of their senior year to tell us what’s really on their minds. From college admissions and artificial intelligence to friendships, family and the pressures of growing up, the answers of our 11 students offer an unfiltered glimpse into what it’s like to be a teenager today.
Before you dive into the full conversation in our August issue, take a look at the highlights from our anonymous survey. Some of the responses may surprise you, some may sound familiar—and all of them offer a fascinating snapshot of the next generation’s hopes, worries and perspectives.
What is your biggest concern as a high school student?
Seven students answered, “Balancing academics with my social life.”
One student answered, “Studying for and doing well on my SATs.”
Two students answered, “The college application process as a whole.”
One student answered, “Peer and/or parental pressures.”
Do you enjoy using social media?
Ten students answered, “Yes, and I use it often.”
One student answered, “No, but I feel like I have to use it.”
Would you describe your school as tolerant?
Ten students answered with a definitive “Yes.”
One student answered “Sometimes” and elaborated:
“Regarding diversity, I feel that my school is very inclusive and tolerant. We have clubs and activities for all groups, including a multicultural club. The student body is filled with people of all different origins, backgrounds and beliefs. I find that my school supports each student and their uniqueness. Regarding behavior, I think that my school is somewhat tolerant because my school enforces the rules and ensures that students are disciplined well. Safety and well-being are priorities at my school, so dangerous behavior isn’t tolerated. However, my school is also open-minded, so teachers are willing to work with students and their struggles, proving tolerance and understanding.”
Find out what each student considers their dream job, who their role models are, which subjects they wish their schools teach and more in the August issue of BERGEN!
