Dr. Hosseini has been committed to moving away from toxic chemicals and materials over the years, including amalgam – a silver-colored filling material that has mercury in it which can be used to fill a tooth after decay has been removed. While many people still have old amalgam, or silver fillings, we no longer place these in our patients’ teeth in our practice, as better, safer material such as composite has become the filling material of choice. Modern-generation composite is a resin-based filling material that is “filled in” to a tooth and cured with a light to harden. Besides being aesthetically pleasing and tooth colored to match a patient’s teeth, composite does not contain the harmful mercury that amalgams do.

SAFER OPTIONS FOR OLD FILLINGS NEEDING REPLACEMENT

If our patients come to us with older amalgam fillings that either have worn down, are leaking, have decay beneath them, or are otherwise compromised, we recommend removal and replacement. Using a holistic approach, we remove these amalgam fillings ensuring proper patient and environmental safety throughout the procedure. This replacement comes by way of either a new filling or a ceramic crown placed following a conservative, minimal reduction method of preparation.
