From community celebrations to ways to offer support, here’s how to show your appreciation.
4 Honor Veterans

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, is a time to recognize the men and women who have served our country and show our appreciation for their dedication. Here in Bergen County, there are plenty of ways to honor these heroes, from community ceremonies and special tributes to a few thoughtful perks for those who have worn the uniform.

This year, the county’s six golf courses are once again inviting veterans and active-duty service members to enjoy a complimentary round from Nov. 9 to 13. Whether you attend a local wreath-laying ceremony or join a Veterans Day gathering, support an organization that helps former service members, there are many ways to show your gratitude. Below are just some of the events taking place next week in honor of our veterans.

Looking to give back this Veterans Day? There are several organizations working year-round to support Bergen County veterans, active-duty service members and their families. Here are a few worthy causes to know:

Bergen County American Legion. The American Legion works to support veterans, active-duty service members and their families while strengthening the broader community. Its programs span everything from emergency assistance and veteran support initiatives to scholarships and educational opportunities for local youth. The organization also promotes leadership and civic engagement through programs such as Boys State, Girls State, and its Oratorical Scholarship Program.

Bergen County Veterans of Foreign Wars. With posts throughout the county, the VFW provides a community for local veterans while supporting those currently serving overseas. Its efforts include programs such as the Patriot’s Pen essay competition, resources for veterans facing difficult circumstances, and ongoing work to maintain national veterans’ cemeteries.

Bergen County Veterans Services. From transportation assistance and employment resources to transitional housing, Bergen County offers a range of services to help local veterans and their families. One particularly valuable initiative is the veteran-led Tracers program, which helps homeless veterans find shelter, employment, and a path toward greater stability.

Community Hope. This Parsippany-based nonprofit is dedicated to helping veterans and their families build healthier, more stable futures. Among its local initiatives is the Alfred J. Thomas Home for Veterans in Paramus, which provides transitional housing for veterans in need. The organization also offers mental health support, housing assistance and other services to veterans and military families across New Jersey.
